Information about Albania

Albania has been named top country to visit for 2011

Last Updated: 03 July 2014

Lonely Planet named Albania top country to visit in 2011:

"Picture a place where rulers have names like King Zog, Enver Hoxha and Bamir Topi. Set the scene with coastal cliffs, snow-capped mountains and jungle-wrapped ruins. Cast some female ‘sworn virgins’ to fill the roles of men who have been lost in ancient blood feuds. Let the spoken dialects be known as Tosk and Gheg. Make it that daily life is governed by a code of conduct with 1262 instructions including 38 on hospitality towards guests."

Theth is a remote rural town within the mountains. You can find two videos on the link below how tourists (mainly through a Germany travel company) go and visit this location. It is based on sustainable tourism and the remote location has actually helped to preserve the nature intact.
The videos are only in Albanian, sorry.

"My worries evaporated as soon as our boat sped into a magnificent bay. The town of Saranda sweeps in a grand arc around one of the great natural harbours of the Ionian Sea. No doubt the Communist regime of Enver Hoxha once pumped a good deal of sludge into these blue waters, but one side-effect of Albania's abrupt de-industrialisation in the early 1990s is a lack of pollution."

An interesting article in the San Francisco Chronicle:
"Pulling down the statues of Albania's real-life Dr. Evil, Enver Hoxha, was easy. Deleting his name from the mountain above town wasn't.
The despotic crackpot who ruled this odd little country for four decades had his first name burned into the mountainside above Berati with acid, in letters 50 feet high. They're going to be there a long time."

History of Butrinti

Details
Category: Saranda
Last Updated: 03 July 2014
The ancient ruins of Butrint are located about 11 miles south of Saranda and are of special interest if you are into interesting insights into ancient world ruins. Virgil claimed that the Trojans settled Butrint, but no evidence of this has yet been found, and the site has been pored over by archaeologists trying to prove it. Treasure hunters from Italy lifted many of the antiquities before the war, but most have since been returned and are on display at the National Museum of History in Tirana. Greeks settled Butrint during the 6th century BC, although the area had been settled long before by the Illyrians.
